ADOBE PHOTOSHOP + ILLUSTRATOR
In cooperation with other designers, this logo graphic was created with the inclusion of the letter “a” from my modular typeface seen below. This graphic was screen-printed onto garments and sold as academy merchandise to raise funds for the student-led class trip to the Hamilton Wood Type Museum and Workshop in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
Logo Design / typeface design
My Creative Process
To ensure my typeface was modular I had to strictly use a grid of squares and avoid using angles or connected “staircase-like” curves. With these constraints, designing an entire typeface was a fun challenge. I started by simplifying each letter form into less distracting shapes. I then attempted to ensure each form was equal in x-height, ascender, and descender height. Then I tested each letter to be designed with those same qualities. Through trial and error, I found that having the typeface be lowercase would help ensure it qualified as a completely
modular typeface.
